Ep66- Julia Brown – Explaining Miscarriage to Children

Last updated Oct 4, 2021 | 0 comments

In episode #066, Julia Brown shares how her pregnancy loss led her to write a children’s book. When she went in for her first ultrasound at 10 weeks gestation, the doctor couldn’t find a heartbeat. After getting her blood drawn and filling her prescription at the pharmacy, she went home and spent the afternoon in the bathroom – only coming out for her son’s bedtime.

Julia and her son had a ritual of making up a bedtime story together each night, and that first night the story had an abrupt and sad ending. The next night, her son asked her to continue the story. Over the next few weeks, Julia retold the story and made hopeful adjustments as she grieved her loss. Out of these bedtime stories came her book, Marshmallow’s Gift Garden: A Hopeful Story for Mommas and Siblings Suffering Pregnancy Loss.

In this book, her child lives on and she can provide support and comfort to other parents and siblings experiencing loss.

Topics Discussed: missed miscarriage, miscarriage during the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining miscarriage to your living children, memorializing children who are not with us
